Plame investigation

I feel like posting a rumor. The word is: Karl Rove will be indicted within a week as part of the CIA leak investigation, and he will soon thereafter resign.

Patrick Fitzgerald says that a new grand jury will be needed to continue the Plamegate investigations, a sign that more indictments may be over the horizon. Good news for haters of the Bush administration.

For some reason, the media has decided that Scooter Libby is Cheney's assistant, even though he was paid as Bush's assistant. And in other Plamegate news, it turns out that Bob Woodward is involved in a very unexpected way.

"Scooter" Libby indicted, resigns; click for the PDF of the indictment. The rumor mill says that Rove was supposed to be indicted today as well, but his lawyer provided last minute evidence to hold it off -- hence, the continuing investigation. If he does get indicted, I assume he'll immediately resign as well.

Edward Lazarus tries to reign in the black-and-white fanaticism of politics, especially that of some liberals with respect to Plamegate. "In contemporary politics, liberals think conservatives are destroying the country with evil hearts through evil means, while conservatives think liberals would destroy the country through decrepit thinking and weak-kneed policies. Doubt does not flourish in this toxic environment; nor does an attention to those facts that might not support one's passionate political position."

The brutal murder of Pamela Vitale is a terrible thing, but the conspiracy theorist in me noted something interesting: her name is very close to being an anagram of Valerie Plame -- if only the t was an r and the a an e.

US News is reporting that rumors have been flying all over Washington that Cheney might resign as a result of the Plame investigations, and that Bush would elevate Condaleeza Rice in his stead. I don't really believe it, but I have this conspiracy fantasy that that's been their plan all along -- get Rice to be Veep, then have Bush resign. President Rice wouldn't have any problems winning the 2008 election, right? (via political wire)

Josh Marshall at Talking Points Memo (among others) thinks that Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation into the White House leak of the CIA identity of Valerie Plame has turned into a conspiracy hunt. Specifically, he posits that the White House Iraq Group, whose job it was to sell the Iraq war and included Karl Rove and Scooter Libby, may be the key to the investigation. If this is true and Fitzgerald goes after them, this could turn into a massive scandal for the Bush administration. I'm not sure why any president would want to serve two terms anymore -- it pretty much guarantees disgrace.
