When I read the CNN story headlined "Misplaced 'not' in Arkansas law allows babies to marry" the other day, I knew something was fishy. Language Log comes to the rescue, criticizing the media for caring more about bad language than bad thinking.
It's hardly credible that moving the negation somewhere else in the statute would succeed in producing a piece of law that could conceivably have represented the will of the people.

Regret the Error has published their always fun Year in Media Errors and Corrections for 2006. For some reason, I like this one:
A story in the July 24 edition of the Sentinel & Enterprise incorrectly spelled Sheri Normandin’s name. Also, Bobby Kincaid is not a quadriplegic. We regret the errors.
But look for the Alito one as well. (8) #12/14/2006

Variety is reporting that HBO has just renewed The Wire for Season 5, which "will examine the role of the mass media in Baltimore." Season 4 started on Sunday with the usual slow burn, but if previous seasons are any indication, things will begin to heat up soon. And if I haven't said it already, The Wire is probably one of the best TV shows I've ever seen, and more than that, one of the best social narratives I've encountered, in print or on screen. Is meth being written about irresponsibly? A great example of when a specific issue can be used to point out general flaws in media reporting.

Regret the Error's Year in Media Errors and Corrections presents the funniest and most shocking media corrections of 2005. Here's one example from Reuters:
Please read in paragraph nine: ‘about 27 million Soviet citizens died’ ... instead of ... ‘more than 27 Soviet citizens died’.

Missing white woman syndrome. The sort of subject wikipedia was made for.
