The electoral map of every election in U.S. history. I had no idea that Maine and Vermont voted against F.D.R. all four times he was elected. (via a. sullivan)

A color-coded map of UFO sightings in the United States. Either aliens don't like the South, the military doesn't conduct R&D tests there, or Southerners aren't obsessed with alien mythology.

A drawn map of the siege of Sarajevo by Bosnian-Serbians that lasted for about half of the 1990's. This interested me because I'm in the midst of William Vollmann's essays about his time spent in the various warring areas of former Yugoslavia, depicted in Volume VI of his opus on violence, Rising Up and Rising Down. He spent time holed up with some students in besieged Sarajevo, and described the tanks upon hills literally surrounding the city. Now I see what he means.

Men are from Entourage, women are from Sex and the City -- at least according to this map of gender ratios of singles in US cities. Who wants to put forth an explanatory theory for the East/West divide?

Informational world maps, where statistics, such as alcohol consumption, determine how large a country appears in the map.

City income "donuts." Info-laden income distribution maps of several American cities. I've never been to Phoenix, but it looks very segregated, at least by class. (via kottke)

Elaborate maps of worldwide language distributions, concentrating on the diverse languages of Asia and Africa. I heard that they say the equivalent of "doing donuts" in southern Togo and the equivalent of "whipping shitties" in central Togo. (via kottke)

Italy and Sicily now have their roads marked on Google Maps. The link goes to a map centered on Pezzolo, the village where my parents grew up. (thx, jmay)

Use Google Maps to see where sex offenders live in your zip code. 42 states available; Nevada coming in July 2006. I feel bad for those sex offenders who slept with a 16-year-old when they were 18, or those who got caught urinating in public (also a sex offense). (thx, jason)

Following the Dollars: find out who in your zip code gave money to which political parties in the 2004 election by looking at a modded Google map. You can actually click on the person's marker and view the donator's name, address, the amount given, and the candidate who received the money. (via pw)

Nachoworld writes about the most recent version of the Common Census cultural influence map of the U.S. I wrote about this last month, noting that there wasn't enough data then to get an accurate representation of cultural influence. As Nacho notes, things are looking a lot more accurate. They also have some maps of local influence, such as this one of the New York City area.

A map of the United States partitioned not by state but by the geographical areas of influence of cities. They still don't have enough data, so the map is subject to change. (via kottke)

A neat set of maps that are both visually attractive and informative. Examples: what the Boston subway system should look like; suicide rates in the US broken down by gender -- the Vegas area has one of the highest rates for men; and an overlay comparison of the US and Europe. (via kottke)
