gay rights

  • Prop 8 - The Musical, starring Jack Black, Allison Janney, John C. Reilly, and many more. This is quite literally the definition of "singing to the converted" but it's actually quite succinct. (0) #

  • Today is the last day you can donate to the No On 8 campaign to defeat California's Proposition 8, which would eliminate marriage rights for same-sex couples in that state. Help end legal discrimination by sending them a Halloween treat. (5) #

  • Dan Savage has some harsh words for Mary Cheney.
Take it from me, Mary: Explaining to your child, after he heard something hateful on the radio, that his family is very much “real,” that it’s not an attack on anyone else’s family, and that his parents are, in fact, fit to be his parents is as distressing and emotionally exhausting as it is unnecessary. And I blame you.
I wouldn't have used the same words, but I think my sentiment is the same. (38) #

  • New Jersey's Supreme Court has just ruled to recognize same-sex unions. They don't quite join Massachusetts yet because it is up to the legislature to decide whether to recognize same-sex marriage or some other sort of civil union. Still, a small glimmer of good news among all the other states who have chosen to write discrimination into their constitutions. (Nevada, I'm looking at you.) (12) #

A Vengeful God

Gay Marriage Protest

Fred Phelps, leader of the cultish Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, was recorded praising the London bombings as the manifestation of God's wrath against the prominence of homosexuality in Britain. For those familiar with Phelps, this was not a surprising nor unusual statement.

I encountered Phelps and his followers outside of the Cambridge City Hall on May 17, 2004 at midnight. That was the moment when gay marriage first become allowable in Massachusetts. You can see one of his followers, who travelled all the way from Kansas, in the picture on the right. As you can see, they also believe that God caused 9/11 and the Columbia explosion -- again, the motive was punishment for the tolerance of homosexuality.

Amen to the 1st amendment, but it sure does bring out the crazies, doesn't it?
