Slate is right: this Rolling Stone article on how America lost the War on Drugs is one of the best articles I've read on the subject, and a general example of excellent journalism.
We continue to treat marijuana as a major threat to public health, even though we know it isn't. We continue to lock up generations of teenage drug dealers, even though we know imprisonment does little to reduce the amount of drugs sold on the street. And we continue to spend billions to fight drugs abroad, even though we know that military efforts are an ineffective way to cut the supply of narcotics in America or raise the price.

This New Yorker book review of a new Timothy Leary biography is actually an interesting survey of how psychedelics and their supporters came to be, although it's somewhat biased in its conclusions. (0) #

The Mexican Congress just voted to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, cocaine, and yes, heroin, and President Fox is expected to sign it into law. What will this mean for their relationship with the U.S., w/r/t the Drug War? (8) #

AP: FBI May Relax Drug Use Hiring Policy. Unless you're applying to be a special agent, it may soon be OK to have smoked some marijuana in your past and still get a job at the FBI. They probably have lost a lot of good people in the past who couldn't help being habitual truth-tellers. Now if only the US military will figure out that kicking out 26 Arab and Farsi gay linguists between 1998 and 2004 was a bad idea. (0) #
