Bob Odenkirk has his own short-form show on Super Deluxe, Derek & Simon: The Show. Why did I have to find this out from Wired magazine?

Robin Williams: Where Funny Goes to Die. There's something almost eschatological about his filmographic timeline. (via as)

"The Sarah Silverman Program" starts tomorrow night on Comedy Central, and the New York Times has an interesting profile on Silverman wherein she talks about her (and originally A.O. Scott's) concern that "mocking political correctness has become a form of political correctness in its own right." (via scanners)

Bored by Borat links? Too bad. Here's a fascinating interview with the three writers behind Borat, with occasional guest appearances by Sacha Baron Cohen trying to drive around L.A. As opposed to the "unscripted" label often thrown about in articles about the movie, almost every joke and scene in the movie was scripted entirely, with the writers essentially creating flowcharts of action based on the reactions of the non-actor participants.

The New York Times asks some famous comedians: what five comedies would you bring if you were to be stranded on a desert island? The five I posted on kottke: The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie, The Big Lebowski, Being There, Sleeper, and Life of Brian. Of course, if you asked me again in two hours I'd probably have a different answer.
Update: Jim Emerson lists some off-the-beaten-path comedies that could've made his list. He includes Brain Candy, which while not mainstream, I know enough people who love it to consider it, well, on-the-beaten-path.

Trailer for Let's Go To Prison. I can't say the trailer itself instills much confidence in me that it'll be funny, but it involves two of my favorite comedic performers: Bob Odenkirk of Mr. Show is directing, and Will Arnett of Arrested Development is starring.

With her new movie Jesus is Magic coming out, Sarah Silverman is getting a shitload of press. But I like this article the best because it tries to get at the latest movement of offensive comedy:
...Silverman has become an important member of a guerrilla vanguard in the culture wars that we might call the "meta-bigots"—other members include the South Park kids, Sacha Baron Cohen's "Ali G", and the now-AWOL Dave Chappelle. The meta-bigots work at social problems indirectly; instead of discussing race, rape, abortion, incest, or mass starvation, they parody our discussions of them. They manipulate stereotypes about stereotypes. It's a dangerous game: If you're humorless, distracted, or even just inordinately history-conscious, meta-bigotry can look suspiciously like actual bigotry.

The New Yorker has a profile on überoffensive comedian Sarah Silverman. "'Everybody blames the Jews for killing Christ,' Silverman says. 'And then the Jews try to pass it off on the Romans. I’m one of the few people that believe it was the blacks.'" (via kottke)
