the coen brothers

  • The trailer for Burn After Reading, the Coen Brothers' next film. (iTunes required, I think.) Great cast, but it could turn out to be another one of those forgettable Coen comedies. (See, e.g., The Ladykillers and Intolerable Cruelty.) (6) #

  • If you're still on the fence about the ending of No Country for Old Men, read this interesting take, which I think captures what the ending is trying to do very well. Of course, it doesn't settle the issue of whether the ending works within the context of the rest of the film, but I think some films work better on subsequent viewings, and I'm looking forward to seeing NCFOM again. Anderson, Baumbach, and the Coens: a trio of articles

The most recent issue of New York magazine has a trio of articles about the people behind three movies I'm looking forward to see this Fall:

  • A profile on Wes Anderson and the making of The Darjeeling Limited.
  • A piece on the underlying philosophy of the films of the Coen brothers. "The first nine-tenths of...No Country for Old Men...is the best thing they’ve ever done."
  • An article about married couple Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and their first film working together, Margot at the Wedding.
