Stylus closes shop; publishes early year-end lists
It's a bit early for year-end "Best of" lists, but Stylus Magazine is shutting down after today. So here's their Top Films, Top Songs, and Top Albums of 2007 (so far). I'll miss their inventive feature columns.

Bah, I suck. Only saw three movies on the main list. Boo for me. Superbad, Zodiac, and Knocked Up. Plus, they were the three most mainstream! I fail at movies.
What, you never saw Death Proof?
Annoyingly I couldn't get anybody to go with me on the first or second weekend, and then it seemed lame to go see it by myself at an empty theater. Renting it seemed to be sort of beyond the point of the film. I had the impression it was designed specifically for in theater viewing, moreso than most films.
Is it worth watching on tape?
Aw, you missed the double header experience. It was like Film Series writ large.
Death Proof is definitely worth watching on tape.
Not to brag or anything, but I have you beat: I haven't seen a single one of those movies.
From the film list: "With Death Proof it’s different, because I just don’t think while it’s on."
I have never understood why film people think this is a good quality in a movie.
Why? It can be for music, for videogames, for sex, so why not movies?
To each his own. I prefer entertainment that entertains me.
I always find it irksome when people talk about going to a movie so they don't have to think. There seem to be a lot of people who consider that a positive experience. I could never figure out why they wanted to do anything at all if the goal was simply not to think -- drink some rum and stare at a wall! Done.
I think maybe CM's version of not thinking and me and Lorelei's version of not thinking are different.
i am totally one of those irksome people. i think about it as the difference between a movie that stimulates your adrenaline more than your critical thinking. i'm all about movies where you're thinking about the cool first pan shot, or if that's the same guy who was in that other scene, or whatevs. but those films can be really exhausting, and i'm often not in the mood to think through a film - it can seem like work. sometimes the best way to relax is to let go of critical thinking skills and just react viscerally to bullshit. i also consider drinking tequila and staring at reality TV an acceptable alternative.
I have to backpedal a bit. I am very fond of entertainment that isn't too challenging. I'm just not entertained by spectacle alone. There has to be some sort of non-intellectually-insulting storyline. That's a personal preference. Other people are more than welcome to go see Saw IV, just as long as they don't dupe me into thinking it's great cinema.
I could barely get through Saw I.
You SAW Saw I? On purpose?
Well, it's the film that launched 1,000 violent horror films, so I wanted to see what the hubbub was about.
It's terrible.
