Saul Williams's Niggy Tardust coming on November 1st
I just got a mass email from Trent Reznor announcing the release of Saul Williams's Reznor-produced album, The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust!
A word on the way we've chosen to release this. There are obvious similarities in how Radiohead just released their new record and the way we've chosen to. After thinking about this way too much, I feel we've improved upon their idea in a few profound ways that benefit you, the consumer. You obviously will be the judge of this in the end. One thing that IS very different in our situation is that Saul's not the household name (yet!) that Radiohead is, and that means we need your support on this more than ever. If you like what you hear, spread the word.
I love Saul Williams, I love Trent Reznor, and I love the album's title. Put this on your radar.
P.S. And for those of you who don't remember my earlier post, Michael Williams, the guy who plays Omar on The Wire, is Saul Williams brother.
P.P.S. Here's the music video for "Black Stacey," a track from his previous album.
P.P.P.S. Reznor's right -- the way this album is being distributed is much more well-thought out than with Radiohead's In Rainbows.

Sweet! Also, I highly recommend Slam, featuring Williams and The Wire star Sonja Sohn. (Recommended to me years ago by luddite robot.)
I love Omar! I saw Gone Baby Gone last night. It was a really good movie. Anyway, Williams was in it. In fact, I think they cast this whole thing watching HBO. There was Omar from the Wire, Beadie from the Wire, a woman from Carnival (the sister of Brother Justin), Silas Adams from Deadwood, an actor from OZ (Antonio Nappa), and the hairlip from John From Cinci. All the acting was impressive, but I really liked that many of the actors were just people from Boston. The film felt like Boston, unlike Mystic River. That film = poop.
I'm trying to spread the word in a similar fashion - a lot is riding on this album, and oh god, it is worth far more than $5. Hopefully they're going to put up a donate bucket at some point, so people can go back and throw more money into the pot.
This is interesting. Did they really hold off publicizing this until just now, or was news of this all about and it completely slipped by me?
They're also being a little more clear than Radiohead was about the fact that the album will be available on CD for a normal price early next year. I feel like a spoilsport for choosing the $0 option (since I'm going to buy the disk).
I heard the Niggy Tardust remix on that NIN single recently and was not into it. Saul has earned tons of benefit of the doubt from me, though.
Man, I can't wait.
Well, it's been known for a long while that they were making a record together. But the online distribution approach and release date was just announced, I think.
I love that they offer the download in FLAC -- and that I had to confirm that I really wanted it in FLAC. =)
Maybe a response to the bad vibes from Radiohead's 160kpbs cocktease?
Explicitly so.
