Mormons and the Bible

Latter-day Saints revere the Bible. They study it and believe it to be the word of God. However, they do not believe the Bible, as it is currently available, is without error. -LDS.org, an official Mormon website

The New York Times quotes the above, suggesting that the questioner who asked about Bible literalism in the YouTube/CNN Republican debate was targeting Mitt Romney. I never knew about this aspect of the LDS church until now. (via andrew sullivan)

I have a friend who keeps pushing for the following raise-your-hand style question geared towards Mitt Romney but open to the field: "Raise your hand if you wear any sort of 'special' underwear."

Of course, at this point there's a possibility that McCain has his own sort of special underwear, so maybe that question should stay unasked.

every time i want to be reminded of why this country is fucked, i think about how sometimes people ask political candidates (with a straight face): "do you believe that everything in the bible is true?"

It would be great if they followed that question up with "Do you believe everything in 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight' is true? How about 'Beowulf'? If not, why not?"

it would be even better if after the candidate said "why yes, yes i do believe everything in the bible," they followed up with, "oh, so you can read and understand ancient hebrew even though there are no vowels and indecipherable letters and phrases, when rabbis and scholars for generations have admitted that they have no real clue what the fucking thing says, and it could be a fucking cookbook for all they know?"
