Google Street View

Want to drive down the Las Vegas Strip on your computer? Google's new Street View will let you. It's only up for select roads in select cities (e.g., SF, LV, NYC), but it's pretty freaky/cool.

it's a little like a movie hallucination sequence, all strobed and stuff. what would be sweet is if you could go into a strip club along the way.

That thing gave me a headache. It shouldn't blur with every move, it should instead just pause and wait for the image to render.

i like how kottke said "major cities." Hmmph. SF, Denver, LV, but not Chicago or LA? More like "select cities".

Don't forget nyc. Now that's a major city. I can see my apartment and a guy I worked with could see his car parked on the street. Pretty cool.

Guess Oakland is a major city too. Take that, Chicago!

seems like they just started with "easy cities." NY and LA make the most sense for the next phase. i bet they keep trying to assign Boston, and the project team members keep quitting.

Speaking of which, how do you suppose they collect this data? Do you think they actually hire somebody to drive every street in a city? That seems like it would take a while and be expensive. What if they put cameras and gps on garbage trucks or taxis or meter maid cars and let vehicles that already cover the city do so? I couldn't find any info on how they actually did it...if someone else can i'd be interested to know.
