Ebert's Best of 2007

Ebert picks his top ten films of 2007. Juno, which I haven't seen yet, is #1. I've seen only No Country for Old Men (#2) and Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (#3) so far. Damn small cities.

I saw Juno last night - unfortunately, my comparison shopping will not begin until the holiday break and into early January, but I am seriously surprised at this pick by Ebert. Perhaps it's a generational thing, and Ebert is obviously feeling old these days, but this movie was cute and nothing more. To put it in perspective: Little Miss Sunshine was cute and a little more. I like Belle & Sebastian and Peaches, but can you imagine a film that probably contains a solid 20 minutes of footage backed by B&S and Peaches songs?

Parts were funny, parts were even heart-warming, but the kind where you're not sure if it's a real fire-place or a fake wood w/ gas burners (if that makes sense...). This film was so completely self-aware that it was impossible to really get into. If this movie were had preceded Todd Solenz or Jared Hess or LMS I might at least think it innovative, but it didn't even have that going for it.

I'd be shocked if any CM commenters back Ebert's pick.

I've had this Little Miss Sunshine fear, but I've enjoyed the Juno trailers more than I ever enjoyed any LMS trailer.

there is a mistake on his page where he states Maria Bello (History of Violence) and not Naomi Watts is in Eastern Promises...that's sad, "interchangeable good blond actress."

I just watched There Will Be Blood. That should be on his list. It was awesome. I've seen 4. Top three and then Across the Universe.

Juno
Across the Universe
Into the Wild

Man, I suck this far. I'll need to pick up the pace. Also, is it just me or have there been like twenty movies called "La Vie En Rose"?

Nothing else on the list really interests me. Elissa loved Away From Her and maybe the Kite Runner, but that is it.

Into the Wild interests me.

I have heard mixed things about the film. Maybe on DVD. I have heard great things about Vie en Rose.

whoa, i just got back from a 4-fer during which i saw 3 of the top 5! that's got to be unprecedented, right?

i also find the selection of Juno as #1 to be odd, but i really liked it nonetheless.

however, for me, LMS was not half as good as it thought it was, whereas Juno is just as good as it thinks it is.

weighing in super late here, but a) Away From Her is brilliant, as was Munro's short story. I read the story and Polley's adaptation is damn impressive. b) Juno is, in my opinion, better than Little Miss Sunshine. LMS was annoying most of the way through; the ending made it.
