Was the park always having crime problems, or was the stabbing isolated? The article isn't entirely clear. If it's perpetually crime-ridden, you might be able to convince me that the issue is having so many homeless people congregated in one location and spreading them out might help everyone. Of course, as Jon May points out, that's an exceedingly unlibertarian answer to the problem.

Also: "The section of a Las Vegas ordinance that made sleeping near a "deposit" of feces or urine illegal was passed unanimously in August by the City Council but was repealed in September." How would that law ever had made sense? Who even cares? The issue is clearly the feces, not the sleeping. But, on the other hand, what are the homeless people doing sleeping within feet of their own (or someone else's) droppings? Or did the feces become so prevalent in Las Vegas that you couldn't help but sleep next to some? So many issues raised here.

1) Yes, Summerlin is very un-libertarian, but that's at least taken for granted around here. My complaint is that even the rural parts of the state are mostly non-libertarian, despite the conventional wisdom.

2) There has been crime around the park, but not to the degree of shutting it down completely, at least with respect to how crime elsewhere is handled here and in other cities. It was merely perfect timing for them, after they got their asses handed to them in court.

3) The feces law was a joke. Even the city attorney said it was passed in error (although he couldn't really explain how that happened). I'm telling you: the city of Las Vegas is purely incompetent.

Also, Jay Jay Jay is a good name.

You know, covering politics for the RJ must be great fun. It's like a circus. Not that arresting people for no reason is remotely funny.

Nice quote from a homeless advocate: "The city should be embarrassed. I don't know why they they're not wearing paper bags over their heads. In the 20-plus years I have worked on this issue, I have never witnessed an administration that appears to be this gung-ho on targeting one population."

You know, working in Vegas is ironically sort of advantageous for flea, the way having Bush as president is ironically advantageous for Jon Stewart: there is endless raw material for indignation/jokes.

I am glad that I live outside the city, because thanks to my toddler I sleep within 500 feet of urine and feces every night.

Thanks to modern plumbing, we ALL sleep within 500 feet of urine and feces, no? It's not like toiletry systems have disintegration units built in.

IF a family members trying to locate a person on the streets in vegas any web sites that can help seems the law wants you to help but cant give you the time of day if theyve past or moved on.QUESTION if a person being homeless is collecting retirement and the goverment doesnt meet with them and there family hasnt seen them except for a Po box and theyre checks are getting cashed how long and how many people are out the doing it????????
