Robert Altman dead at 81

Director Robert Altman dead at 81. MASH, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts, Gosford Park, etc. -- Altman was a great director who consistently made great movies throughout his long career, perfecting the technique of overlapping dialogue. He will be missed.

Just this past Sunday I was talking with a group of fellow film lovers about the great tracking shot that opens "The Player" and pays homage to "Touch of Evil." Altman was one of the best American directors to come out of the wildly creative era of the 1970's, and I will miss him.

Yup, and only recently did I realize that Gosford Park itself is an homage to Jean Renoir's The Rules of the Game, which after I saw for the first time a few months ago quickly became one of my favorite movies.
