A glimpse into David Milch's John from Cincinnati

The New York Times gives us a glimpse into Deadwood creator David Milch's new show on HBO, John from Cincinnati:

The story defies television genre-speak, but in literature it would be called surf noir. There is a dysfunctional family viewed through the twin prisms of surfing and heroin addiction, a space alien and a lawyer named Dickstein. It should be mentioned that some characters occasionally levitate.

Man, I'm so sick of HBO's tired clichés and overplayed formulas. (thx, george c)

This show was and is awesome. I live in Imperial Beach and it was kind of cool when you kept hearing the name I.B. Granted some of the scenes were unrealistic but for the most part everything was as is. I hope HBO airs this show for a long time.....Great Plot.....

What absolute garbage. Worse than what runs out of the Tijuana slews!!. With that meny F-bombs in one show were they trying for a new world record? Just another show written by Hollywood that does not have a clue what the surfing culture is all about. I wasn,t expecting Beach Blanket Bingo, but here is another show with somenone trying to be Quenton T. and failing misserably.

Heh, you're getting the crowd who searched for the show using your headline typo. Nice.

Time to fix that.

I just finished watching the 2nd show, and I found it to be totally awesome! I love the mysticism of John, whatever he is & wherever he hails from. I was going to cancel my HBO subscription once "The Sopranos" finished, but have since decided to stay w/it & see if this show remains as intriguing as it's been so far.

I liked the show. I don't think its going to be as good as Deadwood, but I'm going to give it a chance. I wrote about some of it on my blog:

Didn't surf and know nothing about the sport except it looks like fun...The cast and the story line left me flat the 1st epiosode, but #2 and # 3 gave me primiose for a train of thought that may or may not be where this story is headed. Todays viewers must have as much information as possible and must be stimulated at a fast pace or we loose interest. This show omits a lot of information and allows the viewer to fill in the blanks. the pacing maybe slower than we're use too, but the time can be well spent filling in the blanks.

This is a strange show, yet it somehow grabs me near cthe end of each episode, just about when I've decided, once again, to stop watching it! By the end of each episode, I can't wait to see what happens next!

Alothough I must admmit I don't completely understand what is going on some of the times, and I'm not sure exactly who John is, all characters grow on you with each episode. Ed O'Niel's character is by far my favorite and it's always fun to see who's balls Sissy is gonna break next and just how hard she's gonna hit! And John's purpose, to me, is real clear!

Overall, I really enjoy this show and continue to watch it week after week, record it when I'm not able to watch. I hope this is a new series that continues on HBO. I too was going to cancel HBO when The Sopranos ended, not so now! I'm hanging on for this show and Entourage!
Thanks HBO!

My two favorites, "John" and "Deadwood" killed by stupidos at HBO. David Milch needs to get his head out the rear end of the HBO execs and find a real house to keep his works alive. I blame Milch as much as anyone for my disappointments. I think he, also, cares less about the fans of his productions. This may be the last straw for me, HBO. I'll save my 400 bucks a year so this doesn't happen to my family again, and we'll use the money to buy NON-HBO movies at Blockbuster. Afterall, if I didn't subscribe to HBO, I wouldn't have been let down, time after time. A big mistake. Again.
