Italy drops Sicily bridge plans

Sicily Bridge

Italy has dropped its Sicily bridge plans. The bridge, which was to cross the Strait of Messina, would've been the largest suspension bridge in the world. (Scylla and Charybdis would of course destroy any underwater supports.) One of the reasons cited for killing the project was the stranglehold the mafia had on the construction contracts (La Vangata Grande, anyone?), but I was under the impression that the completion of the bridge would in the long run hurt the mafia by fully integrating Sicily with the Italian economy.

A few years ago I remember visiting the promontory and noting that the upscale houses there with an ocean view would soon be overwhelmed by a massive suspension support system and a highway onramp. I guess they just saved a substantial amount of property value.

I dunno. Houses with Tappan Zee bridge views are quite valuable, no?

My house has a Tappan Zee bridge view! Woot!

Actually I was going to point out that while some of the houses at the base of a potential bridge would probably be hurt in terms of value, the value of every other piece of land on the island would more than make up for their loss. Being able to quickly drive off the island would be a huge boon (I assume) for just about everyone on the island. Property values across the board should rise.

Also, that wikipedia drawing of Chabrydis is hot.

I agree completely that the completion of the bridge would help the Sicilian economy, including property values, immensely. I was merely referring to the houses at the bridge's base. And I wasn't talking about having a bridge view, I was talking about literally being under a massive bridge onramp, near the massive steel beams required to support a suspension bridge of that length.

i was trying to protect your privacy, ingen, but it was, of course, your house i was specifically thinking of. it's not like i know people in nyack or anything.

one would imagine houses at the base would be eminent domained away.

In Italian, eminent domain is pronounced "the mafia."

It is sad. For a reason or another, nothing ever moves there. They always talk about priorities in order not to do anything.
