Now it's the genius of Entourage
Forget The Wire, now Slate's talking about the genius of HBO's Entourage. Here my opinion diverges: I think Entourage is funny -- especially Jeremy Piven -- but unlike The Wire, it is by no means "genius." It's somehow too contrived for that label.

hm. anyone else noticed that there's a lot of "genius" stuff these days?
i guess everything is incredibly good, all of the time now.
oooorrrrrrrrr maybe everyone hyperbolizes a wee bit much.
that comment: genius.
Entourage is a solid B. Piven is great, though he is basically playing what he always plays. That's his range. I love Dillon's character. I feel like those two are the only two good actors on the show. The rest are sometimes downright poor. On top of that, the show is funny, but slight. Sex and the City had more depth than it by far. Sure I laugh and enjoy it, but once I finish, it's gone. Out of my head. Nothing like the Wire which sometimes, and yes I know how lame this sounds, gives me chills it is so good. And even lamer than that, I am getting chills just remembering last weeks episode. No show is even close to it (but I did really like Studio 60. Best new series I have seen since Lost.)
i love sorkin, but was a little underwhelmed by the studio 60 pilot. there were far too many things that i later bulletted as problems. casting was a big one (amanda peet is wrong wrong wrong, and her character is, so far, poorly conceived). plenty of other issues that i'm hoping will be ironed out as it goes along. right now, it lacks the severity of the west wing and the quickwittedness of sports night, and the overall writing seems less "brainy," which is a negative.
i liked "jericho" last night: the first 10 minutes were a WB-teen-drama, and then there was a nuke. now that's entertainment!
Yes, genius is going way too far. It is solid entertainment, but that does not mean it takes
genius to make Entourage.
