Publicized sex baiting

The results of several recent sex baiting experiments on Craigslist, where the experimenter puts up fabricated sex postings and analyzes the responses. One of the experimenters published every response, with photos, uncensored. Two questions are asked: 1) Can the experimenter be sued for revealing information that has a reasonable expectation of privacy? 2) How will this affect the cavalier behavior of adults sending nude photos to strangers on the web? Granted it is extremely stupid to send nude photos of yourself to an unkown person, but that experimenter sure is one malicious fuck.

After reading that whole page, I think calling him an "experimenter" is insane. It sounds more like he was a dick who wanted to prank people. (Or more darkly, as some commenters suggested, wanted to punish people he thought were 'deviants'.)

The part I really wonder about is why a guy would reveal unsolicitedly that he's cheating on his wife, in his first response to an ad, no less. Is this a positive thing for some women on CE?

(I can more easily imagine that a married man would get something out of mentioning that in his response to a male poster, whether because it's a token of being "straight-acting", which some people fetishize, or because it's a salve for also-married men in partial denial about what they're doing.)

You can ask Flea, but I think that reasonable expectation of privacy thing really only applies to the government, and not to individuals. It was pointed out in my Copyright class the other day that emails (and pictures) are presumably copyrightted by the original author (photographer) and you could probably try to sue the experimentor for republishing them without permission.

But man, drawing attention to your idiocy is bound to make things worse. At least the people who just sent pictures of their genitals in aren't going to be recognized on the street. Sending pictures of your face is moronic.

I guess I should have used scare quotes.

crazymonk | Sat, 09/09/2006 - 3:48pm

Or perhaps added a third question: 3) Are the experimenters dicks?

crazymonk | Sat, 09/09/2006 - 3:51pm

the really obnoxious thing is that ALMOST 100% OF "FEMALE" POSTINGS ON CRAIGSLIST ARE FAKE. so what makes this guy "an experimenter" instead of just "an asshole?"

nothing.

jbg | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 5:10am

also, isn't he worried about people taking 35 seconds to figure out that his phone number is 425-443-1573 and that he lives in kirkland, washington?

jbg | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 5:27am

He also likes to critique Star Trek movie soundtracks.

Ingen Angiven | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 7:24am

also, his street address is 726 Kirkland Cir, Apt C203.

I remember a friend, let's call him NYA, and I spent some time looking at postings from "females" on Craigslists. Many offered blowjobs. Many that did had comments that said, "Don't fall for this. This person is a dude."

I wonder if there rare actually dudes who love to blow men while pretending they are females. And if so, can I actually meet them on Craigslist?

The Rodenator | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 10:22am

Hey Rodenator, how are the prairie dogs?

crazymonk | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 10:25am

i'm sure there are many men who love to blow men while pretending they're women. they're called trannys, or in some cases, crazymonks.

jbg | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 11:04am

I like that people went through with the blowjob, and then left negative feedback for the guys.

"It was good, but I mean, it was a dude! Who wants that? I only wanted it enough to tolerate the blow job, but after that I was totally out of there. Gross! If a chick were available, I'd probably prefer that."

Ingen Angiven | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 12:51pm

What are "prairie dogs"?

More followup on the original story here from Xeni at BoingBoing.

I really don't understand why he would put up people's email addresses, names, phone numbers, etc. Seems mean spirited (although, admittedly, funny). But then again, as someone who has done something similar in the recent past, I vouch for the fact that you can't always foresee just how big a deal something is going to be before it happens, and you don't always adequately anticipate the full results of your actions.

I'm sure he's not enjoying the threats. I know they aren't any fun. I wonder if he's going to move too.

Ingen Angiven | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 7:59pm

Ha! "The Rodenator isn’t a recreational method!”

Jon May | Sun, 09/10/2006 - 9:46pm

the rodenator is a way of life

ingen, you had to move because of threats?

liam | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:44am

What'd you do exactly?

Jesse | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 8:39am

This.

Ingen Angiven | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 11:21am

Why did that cause you to have to move house?

Jesse | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 5:31pm

It became a huge Internet sensation, and the guy on the couch got fired. Apparently, that pissed some (probably Comcast) people off.

crazymonk | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 5:46pm

And, presumably, the guy who got fired.

I didn't HAVE to move, but I was going to do so soon anyway and it became convenient.

Ingen Angiven | Mon, 09/11/2006 - 7:30pm

Oh, that's kinda interesting. Maybe they shouldn't've kept the poor fucker on hold for an hour.

Jesse | Tue, 09/12/2006 - 8:00am

Someone shoot this fuck.

Bhagwan Rajneesh | Tue, 09/12/2006 - 10:28am

Bhagwan Rajneesh is an amazing story, someone should make a movie out of that whole incident. It's got election scheming, chemical warfare, murder and intrigue... and all set in some podunk Oregon town... and India. It's great. I don't know why we don't all know about it. I just read about it for the first time a year ago.
