Muse: Black Holes & Revelations

Muse: Black Holes & Revelations
My musical guilty pleasure of the year so far: Muse's latest and fourth album Black Holes & Revelations. Why guilty? Because there's almost something shameless about the way they simultaneously rip-off Jeff Buckley, Depeche Mode, and, yes, U2. I had never heard of Muse before this album (which ignorance my officemate found surprising), so that makes me blissfully unaware of any checkered past.

Shocked you've never heard of this band. I haven't listened to the new album other than the single, but they have previously reminded me of a heavier Radiohead. And they have a Queen vibe too.

the lead singer bought a jetpack with the money from their first album.

The jetpack thing makes me like them more. Aside from their overplayed single from last year, the only thing I know about them is that I once briefly talked to [one of] their lawyer[s] and he actually said "They're big in Europe."

Lorelei | Thu, 07/13/2006 - 6:54pm

What was the single?

crazymonk | Thu, 07/13/2006 - 7:37pm

"Absolution" maybe?

The Rodenator | Thu, 07/13/2006 - 7:41pm

Just listened to some of their older singles: sounds much more like Radiohead and Queen than the current album.

crazymonk | Thu, 07/13/2006 - 7:58pm

Absolution... I remember really liking that song. When did that come out? As I recall I downloaded the rest of the album and wasn't as impressed with the rest of it as I was with that one song and gave up on them. But I think that was a long time ago. I'd totally forgotten.

Ingen Angiven | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 5:03am

Although looking at the lyrics, maybe I'm remembering something else.

I would download the song, but I've got the feeling that my Internet provider is spying on my online activities and I'm avoiding doing anything legally/morally questionable until I've switched off my current account.

(really Lorelei)

I think it was "Time Is Running Out." Come to think of it, was that the same band? [googles] Yes. It was good until it got burned into my synapses from overexposure.

Jon May | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 7:33am

Yes! That was the song. I liked that, whenever that came out. Good call Lorelei!

Ingen Angiven | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 8:18am

I remember hearing "Time is Running Out" as well as "Hysteria" a lot. I am surprised I didn't think of the Buckley comparison before, as I tried to re-listen to their last album last night and it sounded like heavy Radiohead with Thom Buckley or was it Jeff Yorke on vocals.

The Rodenator | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 10:15am

I don't recognize "Time is Running Out" from the iTunes clip. And it doesn't sound like the new album at all.

crazymonk | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 10:47am

Now that I look at the track listing for this new one, I can add that "Knights of Cydonia" is really popular with DJs at LA commercial rock stations right now. It didn't strike me as mind-bendingly awesome, but then neither did OK Computer.

Lorelei | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 11:44am

Knights of Cydonia is catchy, but I think it's possibly the most hokey track on the album. I don't know why they didn't make "Supermassive Black Hole" the first US single.

crazymonk | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 11:55am

the dorky title?

Ingen Angiven | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 12:33pm

"Knights of Cydonia"?

crazymonk | Fri, 07/14/2006 - 12:56pm

Fair point.
