Cher isn't Brazilian

Slate explains why 17 of 23 of the players on the Brazilian World Cup team go by a single name (e.g., Dido, Ronaldinho, etc.). I'm looking forward to the Mexico v. Iran match tomorrow morning -- because my neighborhood is primarily Mexican, and because I want to see how the crowd reacts to the Iranian team.

Interesting. I remember thinking when I saw City of God that the kids in drug gangs called each other nicknames just because they thought it was cool. But now I know that is not the reason why.

P.S. My English uncle who has coached several state championship soccer teams told me today that he thinks Brazil will win. I called him to congratulate him on England's victory... I saw on ESPN as a side note that the US is in a really challenging division and might not make it through to the next round...

When I saw your post, I thought you meant that 17 of 23 players have the SAME name. I was very curious what the Slate article would say.

I add a clarification.
