Massive NSA database

Holy shit. I knew the NSA had some advanced stuff going on, but for some reason I didn't expect it to be all stored at once. Everyone: switch to Qwest if you can.

1) Finally, my efforts are going to some use!

2) Is it just me or is this the most breaking news item that has ever come out of the maw of US-freaking-A TODAY?!

3) Also, how did this ever appear in USA TODAY? It's a huge article...that paper usually has short articles, easily digestible by travellers.

seriously, jon, that's creepy. my first two thoughts were:
1) USA Today does investigative journalism??
2? F jonmay!

and then:
doesn't this at least have some potential for six-month long revulsion/PR? now the repubs' new trope that if dems are elected they'll impeach GWB has some traction..

if only the president would get caught with his penis in an intern's mouth! then this horrible nightmare would be over!

I've been surprised by USA Today before, but that's a whole other level.

So, we went from 'nope, nothing going on here' to, 'well, yeah, yeah, but it's just international calls'... 'well actually, yeah, domestic data mining, but nothing more- externals, but no internals.' How fucking dumb do they think we are?

And then it gets better:

Um yeah, I live in this country and pay Verizon to provide me with phone service, not to protect me, and I pay the government to govern according popular will, not personal whim. I think that gives me a pretty fucking specific need to know.

I just hope the confirmation hearings on Hayden (Haden?) turn this whole thing into the shitstorm it should be. Specter and Leahy both seem pretty pissed about it all, but we'll see.
And yes, USA today?? It makes you wonder, given the shocking abuses of power and culture of corruption, just how hard it is to unearth stuff like this. Next thing you know the "Metro" will be breaking stories about Bush personally raping orphaned jews and muslims in a new federal program to "baptize" them in the interest of national security, since they "just stumbled across it."

-I mean how low do the numbers have to sink? If Bush's and Congress's approval ratings were at 0%, would they still get to ride out their terms?
