Summer blues
The Onion AV Club isn't very excited by the movies coming out this summer, and neither am I. I was particularly bored by the recently unveiled Superman Returns trailer. I will likely see Mission Impossible III, but more for Phillip Seymour Hoffman and director JJ Abrams than anything else.
At the moment, I can only think of four movie going experiences that I'm looking forward to in 2006:
- The Fountain
- The Borat movie
- Snakes on a Plane (note that I said "experiences")
- The Tenacious-D rock-opera
And maybe Fantastic Mr. Fox. (Yes, these aren't all summer films.) As for the summer, I will go see the sequels for X-men and The Pirates of the Caribbean, but I'm not expecting much from either. Admittedly, I'm not familiar with the Fall crop of Oscar-baiting films -- anything else I should be looking forward to?
Update: Ah, two more summer films: I'll go see A Scanner Darkly and Gondry's The Science of Sleep as well.

Bond, James Bond. I think the trailer looks cool and I like the direction they are going in, i.e. a darker (though blonder) Bond. I am looking forward to a few other things. Though I HATE Colin Farrel, I think Miami Vice could be cool just because Mann is behind it. I am looking foward to Lady in the Water because I get an odd enjoyment out of the crap that M. Night foists on moviegoers. It's going to be terrible. Pirates II looks really cool and Nacho Libre looks right up my alley. The Pick of Destiny should be awesome. I have heard some of the music for it, and it's damn good. But the fact is, most summers suck. It's the suprises that make it fun. We will see crap, we will see greatness, and most of all, we will see Snake of a Plane.
Will we really see "greatness" Anthony? I didn't read the Onion article yet, but I thought the trailer for Superman Returns was pretty damn cool. (Thanks for the link CrazyMonk.) Now I have to check out this Bond trailer.
Hey Anthony,
I just checked out the Bond site. (Is this supposed to be in B&W? Oh yes.) Although a big budget action flick, that's not a Summer movie as the release date is Nov. 17. Cool looking trailer though. Did I mention that, although he usually likes shitty movies, big JD is into On Her Majesty's Secret Service like us?
Yeah, but I thought Marco was speaking in general terms. The film he mentions aren't summer releases either.
And yes, we will see "greatness". It might not be from a big budget hollywood film, but there is always something that really blows me away.
fantastic mr. fox is due out this summer?
have you seen wes anderson's AmEx commercial? it's rad.
I started reading that Onion article, but I was a little confused as the intro seems to paint The War of the Worlds as a good movie. That movie was so bad that it angered me.

jgb, great commercial. Much better than M. Night's.
Snakes on the plane is going to be one hell of an "experience" for sure. When it got slapped with a PG-13 rating, David Ellis went back and reshot scenes to increase gore, foul language, and NUDITY! This is going to be one hell of an awesomely-terrible movie. I think this soundbyte sums it all up.

I agree.
Plus, I got teaser posters in the mail two days ago. Pretty exciting.
everyone stop fueling SoaB's ego.
and aaaawww, i liked m. night's commercial. though w.a.'s kick's everyone's ass. "why would i put my hat on when my best friend just got blown up?!"
and deniro and his "i blo ny" bullshit can bite me.
Wow that WA commercial was pretty darn good. I have never seen that one on tv though. I wonder how what percentage of tv viewers know who Wes Anderson is. I imagine it goes a little higher when they're prompted "Wes Anderson, Director", but still I can't see it being too high. Nevertheless, I thought this one came off more self mocking while M Night's came off as so fucking self important. I want the guy to finally make a movie where he bungles the lead role rather than bungling a smaller crucial role as he does now.
that hat line is schwartzmann, isn't it?
by the way, AmEx can go straight to hell for making a commercial i volunteered to watch on the internet. grr.
"must...crush...capitalism..."
I saw the WA commercial before thank you for smoking, and then later on I saw it on TV as well, but it was chopped to fit in 30 seconds. It was pretty unintelligible at that point. so good.
"Can you put a bayonette on the 357 magnum?"
"I don't see why not."
Brilliant.
oh; i've only seen the TV one -- is the youtube the full version? grand.
i love the beard on the scriptdoctor guy. shit, i love everything about that fucking clip.
ps none of this answers my original question -- IMDB has no release date for F.Mr.Fx. is that this summer?
(pps Larry Harris is the Fantastic Mr. Fox).
No. It was supposed to be released this year, but I don't think it is. I don't even know if it is shooting yet. Considering that it is stop-motion, we might not see it until late next year.
that's what i figured. imdb has virtually no info at all.
crazymonk, get your head out of your ass.
Hey, I said "maybe." I apologize for not conforming to summer movies.
sad, sad day when crazymonk doesn't pick up a rushmore reference.
you know, it's been more than 4 years since i've seen rushmore. i think its time is near.
jbg: stop fueling your own ego!
4 fucking years? i'll say it's time is near! watch that shit every 4 weeks, i say.
You know, I am kind of curious to see Prairie Home Companion... otherwise I bet I will see XMen (actually looking forward to it), Superman, The Breakup, and the Davinci Code (I have not read the book-- but the lady of the casa has) and a few other movies.
