Romney and Religion
Will religious discrimination within the Republican party hurt one of their own? Mitt Romney, governor of Massachusetts, is a strong, relatively moderate candidate for president in 2008, but Evangelicals aren't likely to tolerate his Mormon religion. Can he pull a Kennedy?

My guess is that Mitt Romney would probably come off very similar to John Kerry on a national scale-- although I have not paid much attention to Mitt's adventures of late. Actually, I did see on the news one night that Massachusetts is going to try a universal health care coverage plan.
I assumed the Christians would like him as he is, arguably, very religious. Sure, there's minor differences but on the political issues he's going to be right down their alley. It's not like the Mormons and the Evangelicals have different views on abortion or sex education.
Do the fundies not like that? I assumed that they'd gotten over the base discrimination and know to vote with their head on these things.
From this article:
"Evangelical Christians consider Mormonism a threat in a way that Catholicism and even Judaism are not. The LDS Church, they charge, has perverted Christian teachings to create a false religion. As John L. Smith, a Southern Baptist who runs Utah Mission—an organization that tries to convert Mormons—told Christianity Today: "Mormonism is either totally true or totally false. If it's true, every other religion in America is false." To be tolerant of Mormonism is to put evangelical Christianity at risk. And to put a Mormon in the White House would be to place a stamp of approval on that faith."
I think that's right, Monk. From what I know about the "fundies"--admittedly more than I would like--the Church of LDS is an object of outright disdain, mockery, and criticism. While the Right is undoubtedly using the Mormon support when traditional Christians are running for office, I'll be extrardinarily shocked if they rally behind an LDS presidential candidate. In no uncertain terms, Romney himself is a major stumbling block; his policies may be in line, but his religious beliefs will be his downfall if he runs. That said, I do love Schadenfreude, so I hope the homophobic bastard throws his hat in the ring.
