Vegas, Growth, and the Housing Bubble

An article on the rapid growth of Las Vegas and the possibility that the housing bubble could soon burst. Only in Vegas could full-time waiters and valet parkers afford to buy homes, but that's been changing over the past few years and could lead to a devastating housing crisis if the bubble bursts. "It's going phenomenally well," said Mayor Oscar Goodman, a former lawyer for mobsters.

wtf? is there any need to mention that in the article? Goodman's been mayor for how long? In unrelated articles, you don't see "Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a former actor and bodybuilder".

Well, the article wasn't published in a local newspaper, so I think it's a reasonable explanation. You wouldn't see that in the RJ, of course, but how many people reading the Globe or IHT know that Goodman was a former mob lawyer?

You'd see "Gov. Schwarzenegger, former bodybuilder and actor" a lot more frequently if everyone in the world didn't already know that.

My guess is they mentioned that because they LOVE that about him. How often do you get to cover a politician with personality and a sketchy past?
