Bush's Worst Public Moment

Tags:

The idea that as governor he thinks of himself as doing the killing - rather than the refusing to veto - is the creepiest part. I bet he relished every 155 of those deaths, that fuck bastard.
By the by:
In one-third of those cases, the report showed, the lawyer who represented the death penalty defendant at trial or on appeal had been or was later disbarred or otherwise sanctioned. In 40 cases the lawyers presented no evidence at all or only one witness at the sentencing phase of the trial.

In 29 cases, the prosecution used testimony from a psychiatrist who -- based on a hypothetical question about the defendant's past -- predicted he would commit future violence. Most of those psychiatrists testified without having examined the defendant: a practice condemned professionally as unethical.

Not, of course, counting that he's the first president in US history to oversee a federal execution by lethal injection, which naturally was the first TELEVISED via closed circuit TV. SICK, sick, sick.

sorry, the chicago tribune report with those things (paraphrased at http://www.commondreams.org/views/061700-102.htm ) is only available to subscribers.

I had heard about this incident before, but for some reason I always thought Bush said, "I don't want to die." or something ala Sharon Stone in whatever movie that was where she played a death row inmate.

In the case of federal executions, does the president have the option staying the execution?

If so, I can't imagine the president that would halt the execution of Tim McVeigh.

The Rodenator | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 4:48pm

i'm sorry, did you miss the memo? the current president of the united states is probably the worst human being who has ever lived. would you expect anything less from the worst human being who has ever lived?

and yes, i'm including stalin, hitler, hussein and cher.

jbg. | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 5:49pm

I remember seeing this reported in the Austin American-Statesman back when I lived there, so probably in 2001. The thing is, he's had so many bad public moments that they've all run together for me, and I can't say which I think is the worst anymore.

What I find scary about Bush is that he's NOT the worst human being who ever lived. He's just this overprivileged dweeb who stumbled into the presidency through a combination of luck, money, and maybe some genuine political skill (I'm not qualified to judge). There are tons of people just like him out there, and that's the scary part.

Lorelei | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 6:23pm

there are, in fact, tons of people just like him out there, but none of them have killed nearly as many people, at home and abroad.

oh, oh, and don't forget about all of the people who died because of his negligence, even if he didn't pull the trigger.

jbg. | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 6:45pm

negligence? are you in law school too? wanna take my torts exam? it's on tuesday.

DoorFrame | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 7:49pm

Hang on man- I am NO Bush fan, but how could you possibly assert on any level that Bush personally has killed or caused the deaths of more people than Stalin or Hitler? I mean, maybe I'm missing your purposful embellishment but I personally believe it's much more effective to condemn him on real counts. Such as deliberately mocking a death row inmate whose life was in his hands. And even Hussein- how many millions died in the Iran-Iraq war? If you want to trace American culpability in that instance, that wasn't George W. Bush, although it would be pretty easy to call up the names of some of his very close associates.

Jesse | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 10:09pm

oh, I apologize, I made your two separate posts into one. nevertheless, I think it's pretty difficult to quantify evil on that level.

Jesse | Fri, 12/02/2005 - 10:11pm

i never did say he killed *as many* people as hitler, stalin or even cher, but i do consider him to be the cause of way more needlessly stupid deaths than any american president.

how many presidents had "oops, we fucked up and now there are corpses floating down the street of a major american city, but hey at least they're black" moments?

jbg. | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 5:17am

ps or "oops we fucked up and two planes flew into two very large buildings in a major american city killing thousands, but hey at least we can use it as an excuse to oppress and divide the nation and murder some towelheads" moments?

jbg. | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 5:20am

"how many presidents had “oops, we fucked up and now there are corpses floating down the street of a major american city, but hey at least they’re black” moments?"

Well, George Bush I during the LA riots.

DoorFrame | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 5:55am

correction: corpses may have been *rolling* down the streets, but *floating?* prove to me that LA flooded and i shall concede the point.

no, sir, i don't believe they floated at all. not one bit.

jbg. | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 8:11am

besides, while you can blame GB1 for furthering the racial divide in america, a better target would be ronald reagan, who made alienating the black population a national priority.

also, ignored AIDS ("you mean there's a disease that only kills fags? awesome!") in its earliest stages as a pandemic, leading the worst extended public health crisis in world history. ("you mean there's a disease that only kills fags and africans?? AWESOME!")

so, maybe GB2 isn't so bad after all. maybe the worst president isn't the guy who looks like a monkey, it's the guy who starred in movies with one.

jbg. | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 8:16am

i know, i corrected myself and apologized. somehow i conflated two of your posts.

however, and i'm by no means the first person to say this- your last post is more what I'm trying to say- the situation is far bigger than one bad president, and it is important to emphasize that. it's not GWB who is single-handedly the worst person ever, it's an ongoing operation that he along could never man, leading our country down the worst possible path and calling it the best, nay, the only.

Jesse | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 11:38am

i think lincoln and jackson are responsible for more u.s. deaths than bush 2.

jon may | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 1:57pm

how about justified deaths? do you think the civil war was a justified war? after all, it's the bloodiest war in american history. but then, think about all the lives lincoln *saved*.

fuck jackson.

crazymonk | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 4:00pm

Ack, end this Marco, post a new thing.

DoorFrame | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 6:07pm

Soon, my young padawan.

crazymonk | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 6:13pm

Jesse Jackson?

DoorFrame | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 7:55pm

michael jackson is responsible for way more deaths than either andrew or jesse jackson. i mean, have you SEEN some of those fucking 13-year-old european girls and the way they react when he takes the stage?

anyway, i think the key word is "justified." civil war: necessary evil. current fucking jackoff president: unnecessary evil.

bad movie: resident evil.

stunt guy: evel keneival.

jbg. | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 8:13pm
Jesse | Sat, 12/03/2005 - 9:54pm

I don't think we should experiment with deciding whose deaths are most justified. they probably all sucked.

Lorelei | Sun, 12/04/2005 - 9:10pm

I couldn't disagree more, but maybe that's why I find myself reading Rising Up and Rising Down.

crazymonk | Sun, 12/04/2005 - 9:36pm

You're still working on that thing? How many books have you gotten through?

DoorFrame | Tue, 12/06/2005 - 8:51pm

I've read the first 4 out of the 7 volumes.
