Common Census Update

Nachoworld writes about the most recent version of the Common Census cultural influence map of the U.S. I wrote about this last month, noting that there wasn't enough data then to get an accurate representation of cultural influence. As Nacho notes, things are looking a lot more accurate. They also have some maps of local influence, such as this one of the New York City area.

All is lost. We're going to end up living in a walled garden where all of our content comes only from each other.

OUR content? when are you going to get in this game, df?

I had a blog once, remember? It didn't turn out so great.

Anyway, I'd have to pay for a better hosting company than I have now. My current hosting company is free, so that's going to be hard to beat.

I still think one of you should just set up a multi-party blog and that way we could avoid this whole mess.

What do you mean it didn't turn out great? You were (in)famous in a local community of at least 5000 people!

I could easily make crazymonk.org multi-party. I can just give you accounts, and you'd have full access.

Ha, rumorsdaily had its moments.

"I could easily make crazymonk.org multi-party"

Eh, but doesn't that destroy the thing you've got going?

DoorFrame | Tue, 11/29/2005 - 2:56pm

explain.

During Stephen Hawking's Q&A there was another guy in a wheelchair in the back of the auditorium who had the same sort of text-to-speech system as Hawking. At one point he somehow indicated that he wanted to ask a question and the phrase "What happens to you when you die" or something similar blared out of his speakers on a loud, fast loop. It was a combination of hilarious and terrifying at the same time. Hillarifying?

DoorFrame | Wed, 11/30/2005 - 10:50am

I was there, but I don't remember hearing that. I was too busy asking my own question, and remembering the jumbodung interview.

crazymonk | Wed, 11/30/2005 - 11:06am

DF has spoken true words. In addition to the hillarifying effect, there may have been a bit of surprise and realization in the air as the whole auditorium is trying to figure out why there's a Stephen Hawking doppleganger speech synthesizer in the back of the room.

was there anything interesting in the jumbodung interview? what question did you ask? i forget the more important parts of the speech, but i sure won't forget the kid.

nach | Thu, 12/01/2005 - 11:19am

you know, the jumbodung interview used to be accessible via archive.org, but no longer is.

i asked something like: "in your book a brief history of time, which you wrote 20 years ago, you wrote that you believed that the Grand Universal Theory would be discovered within twenty years. what do you think of that now?"

he sat there for about 3 or 4 minutes, and then vocoded: "i still believe it, but the twenty years begins... now."

crazymonk | Thu, 12/01/2005 - 12:04pm

that was a good one, i remember that one.
also, good use of the word "vocoded"
