Yeah, the Times and the pundits made up the "growing conservatism" story. While the Republicans have been more electorally successful, the measurements of public opinion haven't showed significant signs of change. There are some big validity issues if you try to use electoral successes to measure opinions. We were actually just looking at the data the other day.
