Shit going down in Tunisia

Today's an interesting day for the Berkman Center (my employer). After releasing an OpenNet Initiative report that details how the Tunisian government censors, filters, and controls Internet information, a couple of Berkman fellows (Ethan Zuckerman and Rebecca MacKinnon from Global Voices) are hosting a session called "Expression under Repression" at WSIS -- and the Tunisian authorities aren't happy about it.

I haven't followed any of those links yet, but sounds intense. today there're a bunch of students out at a table here at the new school w/ petitions and letters to sign for Condi and such, 'cause apparently a new school ?sociology? phd from ethiopia, who's back there promoting democracy, just got arrested by the eth. gov. because he was protesting what he claims were fraudulent elections, something to that effect. So he's been jailed for treason, which carries the death penalty there (as it does here, of course... or was that only during the cold war? still in effect here right?).

yes, treason still carries the death penalty. but i don't think it's been used recently.

I think it was mentioned regarding Jose Padilla and his dirty, dirty bomb. But then they realized that rather then killing him, they could just throw him in a dark cell uncharged for the rest of his life (not that I'm saying he's like a good guy or something).
